SEO for Manufacturers
Specialist SEO for UK manufacturers and engineering firms. I ran marketing for a £90m manufacturing group before going independent.
I’m Dan George. Before starting Little Green Agency I spent four years as Group Marketing Director at an international manufacturing group, covering precision engineering, industrial flooring and construction products. I know how technical buyers search, how long the buying cycle runs, and why generic SEO advice falls flat in your sector.
Now I help UK manufacturers get found by the procurement teams and engineers who are already looking for what you make.

Why SEO for manufacturers is different
Most SEO advice is written for businesses selling to consumers, or to other businesses with short, simple buying cycles. Manufacturing is neither.
Your buyers are technical, and there are several of them
A single purchase might involve a design engineer checking whether your part meets spec, a procurement manager comparing suppliers on price and lead time, and a technical director signing it off. They search differently, they want different information, and your site has to serve all three.
The buying cycle is long
Someone researching a component today might not raise a purchase order for six months. That means visibility early in the process matters more than a hard sell, and it means judging SEO on this month’s enquiries will always mislead you.
The keywords are specific and low volume
Nobody types “manufacturer”. They search for a material grade, a tolerance, a standard, a part number, an application. These terms get a fraction of the searches a consumer keyword does, but the person typing them is qualified in a way a consumer never is. Chasing volume in this sector is a mistake.
Most of the research happens before you hear from them
Industrial buyers now shortlist suppliers online long before they make contact. By the time an enquiry lands, you have often already been compared against two or three competitors. If you were not visible during that stage, you were not in the running.

I have sat on your side of the desk
Most SEO agencies will tell you they understand manufacturing. Ask what they actually did in the sector and the answer is usually a client list.
Before I went independent, I spent four years as Group Marketing Director at an international manufacturing group turning over around £90m. I ran marketing across the group, covering precision engineering, industrial flooring and construction products, in the UK and overseas.
So I have been the person on the other side of the table. I have worked with technical teams to turn a spec sheet into something a buyer can actually use. I have dealt with distributor networks, trade shows, and the kind of lead times that make a consumer marketer’s eyes water. And I have had to justify marketing spend to a board that wanted to know exactly what it returned.
What that means for your SEO
I do not need you to explain what a tolerance is, why your product range is structured the way it is, or why your biggest customer takes nine months to place an order. That means less time educating your agency and more spent on work that moves the needle.
“If your growth problem is really a distributor problem, I will tell you.”
It also means I know where SEO genuinely helps a manufacturer and where it does not. If your growth problem is really a distributor problem or a positioning problem, I will tell you, rather than sell you a retainer.
What I do for manufacturers
SEO for a manufacturer is not the same job as SEO for a shop. Here is where the work actually goes.

Technical SEO for large product catalogues
Manufacturing sites tend to be big, with hundreds of product and capability pages, often generated from a database or PIM. That creates crawl problems, duplicate content and pages Google never sees. I fix the foundations so your catalogue is properly indexed and your important pages are the ones that rank.

Product and capability page optimisation
Your product pages are your money pages, but they are usually written for someone who already knows what they are looking at. I make them work for search without stripping out the technical detail your buyers need.

Specification and application content
Buyers search by material, grade, standard, tolerance and application, not by your product names. I map those terms to your range and build the content that captures them, which is where most manufacturing sites leave the biggest gap.

Long-tail technical keyword targeting
Rather than chasing a handful of high-volume terms you will never rank for, I target the specific, low-volume searches that qualified buyers actually use. Fewer visitors, far better ones.

Authority building in your sector
Links from trade publications, industry bodies and supply chain partners carry more weight in your sector than generic directories. I focus on relevance over volume.

Reporting that a board will accept
Rankings are not the point. I report on enquiries, on which pages and terms produce them, and on what it is worth, in language you can take into a management meeting.
Getting found in AI search
Search a manufacturing term now and Google often answers it directly, with an AI summary above the results. Your buyers are also asking ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity which suppliers to consider, and taking the answer at face value.
If those tools do not know your business exists, you are invisible at exactly the point a shortlist is being formed. And unlike a search result, there is no page two to be on.

Why manufacturers are particularly exposed
AI tools lean heavily on structured, well-organised technical information. Manufacturing sites are often the opposite: product data locked in PDFs, spec tables built as images, capability information buried three clicks down. All of it invisible to the systems now answering your buyers’ questions.
What I do about it
I structure your technical content so it can actually be read and cited, get your specifications and capabilities out of PDFs and into indexable pages, and build the kind of clear, authoritative content these tools draw on. It is the same rigour as good SEO, applied to a new set of rules.
I build for this, not just talk about it
I built a free AI Visibility Checker that shows any business whether it appears in AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. I have also published original work on recovering visibility in AI search, including a widely-read guide on getting your content back into ChatGPT’s results. When I say I understand AI search, I can show you the tools I have built to prove it.
Sectors I know
Manufacturing is not one industry. These are the areas where I have direct experience, either in-house or through client work.
Precision engineering
Machined components, tight tolerances, technical drawings, and buyers who know considerably more about your product than you do about their application. Long qualification processes and specification-led searching.
Industrial flooring and surfaces
Specification-driven selling, where the decision often sits with an architect, contractor or facilities manager rather than the end user. Visibility in specification platforms matters as much as Google.
Construction products
A sector with its own search behaviour entirely. Buyers work through NBS and Barbour Product Search as much as they do through Google, and being absent from those is a gap SEO alone will not fix. I know how the two work together.
Plastics and polymers
Grade-led searching, material properties, and applications that span half a dozen unrelated industries. Getting the content architecture right matters more here than almost anywhere.
Industrial distribution
Different problem again. You are not selling what you make, you are competing on availability, range and service against people selling the identical product.
How I work
No account managers, no juniors, no long chains. When you work with me, you work with me.
1.
Free review
We start with a no-obligation look at where you stand: how visible you are for the terms your buyers use, and where the gaps are against your competitors. High-level, enough for you to see the opportunity. No cost.
2.
Proposal
If it is a fit, I build a proposal around your goals and your sector, not a standard package. Where a full technical audit is the right first step, that is a paid piece of work and I will say so upfront.
3.
The work
I do it. Strategy, technical fixes, content, reporting, all from the person you spoke to on day one. You get a single point of contact who already understands your industry.
4.
Reporting you can use
Monthly reporting in plain language, focused on enquiries and what they are worth, not vanity metrics. The kind of thing you can take into a board meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions
SEO for manufacturers: common questions
How is SEO for manufacturers different from normal SEO?
The buyers are technical and there are usually several of them, the sales cycle is long, and the valuable searches are low-volume and specification-led. It rewards depth and precision over chasing traffic. Someone who treats a manufacturing site like a consumer site tends to target the wrong terms entirely. I go into much more detail in my practical guide to SEO for manufacturers.
Do you actually understand technical products?
Yes. I spent four years as Group Marketing Director at an international manufacturing group, across precision engineering, industrial flooring and construction products. You will not need to explain your sector to me before we can get anywhere.
We sell through distributors, not direct. Does SEO still help?
Often more than you would expect. Even when the transaction goes through a distributor, the specifier or end user is researching you online first, and your distributors benefit from you being visible. But if SEO genuinely is not the right lever for how you sell, I will tell you.
Our products are niche. Is there even enough search volume?
Usually the opposite problem to the one you are worried about. The searches are low-volume, but every one is a qualified buyer rather than a passer-by. Ten of the right visitors a month is worth more than a thousand of the wrong ones.
How long does SEO take to work for a manufacturer?
Longer to judge than in most sectors, because your buying cycle is long. You will see ranking and visibility movement within a few months, but the enquiries that result may follow the same six to nine month cycle your sales already run on. Anyone promising fast results does not understand your business.
What does it cost?
It depends on the size of your site and how competitive your terms are. I price clearly and upfront, with no hidden retainers, and I will tell you honestly whether the opportunity justifies the spend.
Ready to get found by buyers who matter?
The engineers and procurement teams you want are already searching for what you make. If your site is not visible when they do, your competitors are getting those enquiries instead.
Start with a free, no-obligation review. I will show you where you stand, where the opportunity is, and give you a straight answer on whether SEO is worth it for your business. No pressure, no jargon, no hard sell.
